So I'm sitting here, when I should be sleeping. I've kind of discovered myself finally seeing some advice that was given to me a while back when I was at Northwest Missouri State University. I was dating somebody, and surrounding myself with quite a few individuals who were involved in the Fine Arts programs at NWMSU. We would attend various music events and such. I would always sit there with an extremely bored look. My girlfriend at the time, told me that I was bored because I had no culture. I then replied, "I just don't enjoy this type of music."
This being about 2 or so years ago. I find myself listening to the soundtrack to the musical RENT. The thing is that I am really actually enjoying it and appreciating it. I was very stubborn at the time and kept telling myself that if it wasn't screamo/heavy rock music, then it wasn't worth my time. I don't know why all of a sudden I find this soundtrack very listenable. It in a way makes me think about the time I saw the movie up at school and just was bored to death. I now am actually, getting the movie to watch as we speak.
It just kind of hit me that there is no reason why people should not become as cultured as humanly possible. I have kind of learned that any type of art can grow on you if you give it enough time. I don't know why RENT seemed just so dumb to me. I think I was in a sense, seeing myself as "cooler" than that. Looking back at that phrase I want to laugh at myself.
Having exposure to music, art, video or any other type of creative experience is something I would love to just dive, head over heels in to. I don't know why people(myself obviously included) don't enjoy all forms of entertainment they are exposed to. If you go to a musical, a movie, a concert, an art gallery, or all of the above, why not find the good in all aspects of them. Don't look for reasons why you are bored, or don't like it. Put yourself in the artists' shoes. Think of if you were on stage performing a play, or creating a piece of art to show to others. The hard work and effort you put forth.
I guess the big point I'm trying to make to you all and myself is that give everything a chance. Regardless if you have had a bad experience in previous occasions. If you see a movie by one actor and afterwards you thought it sucks, don't make that your only impression of them. It's entertainment and you should let out all expectations or beliefs and just enjoy what is being delivered.
You have no idea how much I want to go and just in a way explore the world. I don't mean that in the literal sense of going to Africa or Ireland. I mean that I want to start going out to events. Art galleries, comic forums, poetry readings, concerts. Just any and everything to just get out there and see other people's creations. Other people's passions. If you're like me, then give it a try, erase all impressions of things that turn you off, and just go for them. Give them a second chance without having any expectations. You never know, you may find something that you never knew before you enjoyed.
